Right to Housing

The right to work is essential for realizing other human rights and forms an inseparable and inherent part of human dignity.

It contributes at the same time to the survival of the individual and to that of his or her family, and insofar as work is freely chosen or accepted, to the individual’s development and recognition within the community. The right to work is recognised under Article 6 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, as well as in other human rights treaties.

Why?

Women are still employed less than men, with a 24 % point gap (43% vs. 67%).

1

Women earned 83 cents for every dollar men made

2

Children under 15 in conflict zones are 3x more likely to die from disease than violence.

3

The right to work includes a number of key elements. First, every individual has the right to freely choose their employment and to have access to a job without discrimination. This includes the freedom to accept, reject, or change employment according to personal choice, qualifications, and circumstances. In addition, there should be no discrimination in employment, whether based on race, colour, sex, language, religion, political opinion, national or social origin, disability, or any other status.

Besides the right to employment, international law also recognises the right to just and favourable conditions of work. This includes the right to fair wages, safe working conditions, reasonable working hours, and the right to rest and leisure. Finally, the right to work also includes provisions to protect individuals from unjust dismissal or involuntary unemployment. Workers should have access to social protections like unemployment benefits, retraining, and support to help them reintegrate into the workforce after losing their jobs.

These essential values are the foundations of a life with dignity, and are guaranteed by social, economic, cultural, and environmental human rights.

At Just Access, we believe that every person deserves to live a life with dignity. Through innovative and proven methods, we strive every day to make sure that everyone’s fundamental human rights are respected and protected.

Our unique approach combines a focus on social, economic, cultural, and environmental human rights with access to justice. Social, economic, cultural, and environmental rights are indispensable to a life with dignity, but too often people can’t access the legal means to enforce their rights.

By breaking down the barriers to access to justice, we can unlock the power of law, and build a fairer, kinder, more equal world for current and future generations.

Social, economic, cultural, and environmental rights protect some of the most fundamental human values.  Everyone should have clean water to drink.  Everyone should have enough food, and food that is nutritious and culturally appropriate.  Every child should have a roof over their head, healthcare when they fall sick, and an education that opens their eyes to the world.
