Right to Water and Sanitation

Justice Begins with Clean Water.

Every person deserves access to clean, safe and accessible drinking water and adequate sanitation services.

The right to water and sanitation is based on the principles of equality, non-discrimination, and participation, and is recognized under international law. In 2010, the United Nations General Assembly explicitly recognized the right to water and sanitation, and this right is also included under the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). However, despite improvements in the provision of those basic services, billions of people around the world still lack access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene.

Why?

Together, unclean water and poor sanitation are the world’s second biggest killer of children.

1

443 million school days are lost each year to water-related illness.

2

Children under 15 in conflict zones are 3x more likely to die from disease than violence.

These essential values are the foundations of a life with dignity, and are guaranteed by social, economic, cultural, and environmental human rights.

At Just Access, we believe that every person deserves to live a life with dignity. Through innovative and proven methods, we strive every day to make sure that everyone’s fundamental human rights are respected and protected.

Our unique approach combines a focus on social, economic, cultural, and environmental human rights with access to justice. Social, economic, cultural, and environmental rights are indispensable to a life with dignity, but too often people can’t access the legal means to enforce their rights.

By breaking down the barriers to access to justice, we can unlock the power of law, and build a fairer, kinder, more equal world for current and future generations.

Social, economic, cultural, and environmental rights protect some of the most fundamental human values.  Everyone should have clean water to drink.  Everyone should have enough food, and food that is nutritious and culturally appropriate.  Every child should have a roof over their head, healthcare when they fall sick, and an education that opens their eyes to the world.
